The “born-again” Christian moniker has appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post. It has also made the cover of news magazines and the captioning of TV news. I remember when it became an awareness in our public media sources. It was the year that Jimmy Carter was declared a presidential candidate, and the news was buzzing with his claim about his own life as a “born-again Christian.”

Since then, most secular writing has referred to a “born-again” Christian as a different kind or segment of faith. It’s usually steeped in symbols or cultural descriptions that identify with evangelicals. As a result, it is still considered primarily a kind of adherent to Christianity as a religious group.

But it actually identifies one of the greatest paradigm shifts in history. As we will see over the next few weeks of Sundays, this paradigm shift changed everything then and defines everything now about following Jesus. You’ll find it throughout the Christian Scriptures, and if we understand it, it can be life-altering for us and our world.
